Barcelona vs. Shakhtar
A walk in the park for Barcelona? The biggest worry for Guardiola’s team will be how this two-legged affair has an impact on their league season – a trip away to Shakhtar right before they play Madrid isn’t the best of preparations for a big game. That being said, Barcelona are form favourites and while they’ll be guarding against overconfidence, you don’t see the likes of Messi and Villa not winning this game. Getting injured in it? Well that’s a different story.
Shakhtar have done well to get this far, possibly a bigger success story than Tottenham for this year’s Champions League. Their best hope is to score a gaol at Camp Nou in the first leg and keep the tie in balance when they take it back home for the second leg. They’ll be happy to rough Barcelona up, but it’s ridiculously easy to lose your head and the game in the space of 10 minutes against the best sides, and Barcelona are the best in world football at the moment.
Predictions: Barcelona to win. Possible injury to a key Barcelona player.

Real Madrid vs. Tottenham
If you saw Madrid v Lyon during the week, you’ll know that this Madrid side is kicking things up a notch. With Di Maria and Ozil alongside Ronaldo plus Benzema finding his form, keeping this side at bay – at the Bernabeu or at White Hart Lane – will be next to impossible. This is the toughest tie Tottenham could have gotten (with the exception of Barcelona).
Madrid’s key worry will be their kick-happy defence and how it deals with Tottenham’s pacy and vibrancy. Plus you also have to consider whether Tottenham will be able to deliver as assured an away performance against Madrid as they did at the San Siro. Madrid are not Inter or Milan. If everything comes down to Bale, you can rest assured Madrid have a plan for him.
Predictions: Real Madrid to win.

Chelsea vs. Manchester United
Ah, the big English tie. Two squads seemingly on the decline / in transition, with considerable ‘recent’ history. Chelsea have the upper hand in playing a disciplined, physical game and just wearing United down. Of course, they don’t have Luiz available for Europe, but the rest of the side is good enough to give United a scare at Stamford Bridge. Old Trafford will be a very different story, and a great end-to-end match.
Manchester United’s biggest worry – and the thing this game will eventually rest on – is the state of their defence.
You might think that Rio’s absence is not important as he hasn’t played many games this season anyway, but only have one senior defender fit (actually United will be happy if he’s fit after the international break) in the run-in to the season and see how quickly points are lost. At least in the league Arsenal have similar concerns. In Europe, United may be welcoming the return to form of Rooney (and Valencia / Park / Fletcher returning from injury in the near future) but United’s defence is where the battle would be won or lost. The closest / toughest tie of the last-eight to call.
Predictions: Chelsea have the advantage.
